Regardless of project size, there needs to be a long term vision for any online effort to be worthwhile. Even a small project
still has to have a direction, and it's the job of the project manager to steward the process resources to reach the ultimate goal.
For larger projects with multiple components and increased personnel, it is vital to stewardship for the project
manager to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with everyone involved on all levels. Someone must hold the overarching final vision, or the created result with never match the original intention.
Project management is front-loaded planning, followed by due diligence to make sure that the plan is executable.
Firming up the budgetary needs in order to fully execute the project as an assessment of total real costs requires experience
and a level of objectivity that is often overlooked in online business planning, which casts a reflection in the number of
failed or subsistence-level enterprises found online.
All of the moving pieces in a project must be made to dance to the manager's tune, and not the fragmented agendas
of the component players... otherwise the project will not execute in a timely manner. Most of the project manager's time is
spent in editing, proofing, or testing the work of programmers and designers. Programmers by nature are linear thinkers,
often they have a hard time with abstract concepts, so they just program "how" they are told to do it. Left to their own
devices, the way they get to their current objectives may be completely incompatible with future project modules or component
logic, so this must be handled properly from the beginning.
If this sounds like the voice of wisdom, that would be a correct assessment. We've already learned these things
the hard, painful, expensive way with our own ecommerce businesses. While they were valuable lessons, we don't particularly
care to re-experience them, nor would we like our clients to suffer for someone else's lack of project management experience.
